Buying Guide: Akko Keyboards for Gaming
Typing on the Akko Prunus Lannesiana 5098B($109.99) has the soothing sonic resonance of sunny midday summer rain. There’s density to each percussive hit of its 104 keys, devoid of any sharp or tinny notes. Every stroke feels smooth and pillowy.
But that’s exactly what I expected from Akko, known for making a wide variety of keyboards and mechanical switches. The decade-old Chinese brand emphasises its products as “lifestyle gaming peripherals” that meld quality hardware with licensed IP, images, colors, and trends that resonate with various online cultures. Collaborations can range from the cute and melancholic Gudetama limited edition to the artful Demon Slayer collection.
The Prunus Lannesiana 5098B is a wireless 100% full-size keyboard that comes in a pink and white colorway. Other colors are also available, such as Glacier, Ink Green, and Black & Gold. What sets the 5098B apart is its inclusion of a vertical 172×320 LCD screen between the main deck and the number pad. This LCD screen can be customized with various animations, giving your keyboard that extra level of personalization.
Sitting underneath each key is an Akko V3 Piano Pro Switch. It’s a linear switch that has a smooth travel that’s pre-lubed from the factory for a frictionless feel.
Other features for keyboard enthusiasts include hot-swappable switches, gaskets for extra sound dampening, RGB backlights, and PBT keycaps, which have greater durability and oil resistance. The keys have an ASA profile for a recognizable typing experience. Getting adjusted to the 5098B is easy, and there’s also a volume wheel on the top right-hand corner that makes for a convenient addition.
In terms of wireless connectivity, there are two options: 2.4 Ghz via a wireless USB dongle and Bluetooth. The dongle allows for faster connection speeds, which is good for gaming, whereas the Bluetooth mode makes switching between devices easier. Inside is an 8,000 mAh battery, which gives plenty of headroom for wireless usage without requiring a recharge. Of course, you can also use a wired USB connection.
More from Akko
The 5098B isn’t the only keyboard from Akko available at Micro Center. If a full number pad is necessary, there’s also the Akko x MonsGeek Colorful Cats Keyboard and the Akko MG108B Bun Wonderland Keyboard, both under $100. An even better value is the Akko MG108B Bunny Apple, with its cute bunny apple keycaps. All three use the Akko V3 Piano Pro Switch but don’t include the LCD display.
The Akko Black&Gold 3098B Plus is also a full-size keyboard at a much more affordable price, and comes with Akko V3 Cream Yellow Pro switches, which are still excellent.
Those looking for a smaller keyboard, the Akko MOD007B PC Tokyo Wireless Keyboard, Akko MOD007B PC Santorini Keyboard, and the Akko 7th Anniversary RGB Wireless Gaming Keyboard are also available. These keyboards use magnetic switches, which are more ideal for competitive gaming as they can sense the exact amount of pressure, offering advantages in certain situations.
Lastly, for those on a budget, the Akko The King’s Avatar 3087 V1 is a wired mechanical gaming keyboard that delivers high-quality switches and components at a very affordable price, currently under $40.
Micro Center also offers a variety of Akko-branded switches, so that whatever your preference, keyboards can be tweaked to meet your needs with near limitless levels of customization. If you want to test drive these keyboards and switches, it’s certainly worth going to your local Micro Center in person to see and test for yourself.
